Regaining autonomy
Foundation of Emitec Technologies GmbH
Decades of research had gone into the development of metal substrates as a basic component of catalytic converters long before ceramic catalysts were presented as a solution. In 1929 Joseph Christie Whitney Frazer from Baltimore, USA, recognised the advantages of metal and patented his designs in the same year.
Convinced by the enormous benefits of metal catalysts, many car makers supported the development of steel foils for substrates over several decades. All attempts failed at the point of implementation until a group of engineers at Interatom, a Siemens subsidiary, with specialist knowledge of joining high-strength materials finally met with success.
This was the beginning of the Emitec metal substrates Metalit® success story.
More
Emitec Emission Technologies GmbH was founded in 1986 as a joint venture between Siemens and GKN. In 2007 after Siemens VDO Automotive was sold to Continental, we became a 50/50 joint venture between Continental and GKN. In 2014 Continental acquired the shares of GKN and we became part of the powertrain division of Continental AG, afterwards renamed into Vitesco Technologies. Now we belong to the Dubag Group, which has allowed us to become independent again as Emitec Technologies GmbH – providing innovative technologies and solutions not only for emission control.
Over the years Emitec has been a world leader in the development of highly innovative metal substrates – forming the backbone of our one step ahead solutions for automotive and non-automotive emission reduction solutions. Since its foundation Emitec has sold more than 360 million high-quality METALIT® and EMICAT® metal substrates and is a long-standing development partner for engine and automobile manufacturers as well as for non-automotive industries. We work together with our customers to develop products, solutions and systems providing full support with our engineering and test center services.
Emitec employs more than 1000 people at its locations. Production facilities are located in Lohmar and Eisenach (Germany) and in Pune (India). Development centers are based in Germany. Supported is Emitec by offices in Italy, Japan, South Korea, China and USA.
The company’s customers include the major car, truck and motorcycle manufacturers from across the world as well as in the non-road sector producers of tractors, agricultural machinery, construction equipment, ship engines and diesel locomotives. Emitec owns over 1100 patents worldwide, a fact that reflects our innovative strength.
